What are BMW winter tyres?

BMW winter tyres should be used when temperatures drop below 7°C and when the roads become slippery. Not to be confused with ice tyres or snow tyres, winter tyres don’t have metal studs poking out of the tread. However, they are far more effective than summer tyres on snow and ice, as they provide more traction. Winter tyres are also safer than summer tyres when it’s raining because they are better at clearing standing water.

Between November and March, winter tyres generate more grip on the roads in colder conditions than other tyres. We strongly recommended that you switch to winter tyres to ensure the safety of you and other road users, particularly in dark and icy weather conditions. How do BMW winter tyres work?

BMW winter tyres are designed to provide optimum traction in cold weather conditions. Unlike conventional tyres that are made from a harder compound, winter tyres have deep grooves and narrow cuts, which are built into the tread. This prevents the tyre from becoming extremely rigid and slipping across the surface of the road in very cold conditions. Their innovative design helps disperse water and snow evenly to allow the rubber to move around, improving your BMW’s contact with the road.
How are BMW winter tyres different from summer tyres?
BMW winter tyres differ from summer tyres in three main ways: the tread pattern, the compound and the rubber blocks.
- Tread pattern - Unlike summer tyres, the tread pattern in winter tyres has more grooves - also known as sipes - cut into it, helping the tyre to displace water and bite into the snow.
- Compound - Winter tyres are made from a compound that has more silica in it, which makes them stay soft and supple during freezing temperatures. Summer tyres are far more rigid in cold weather conditions, which prevents them from gripping to the road.
- Rubber blocks - A winter tyre’s rubber blocks are designed to vibrate when moving, allowing all the snow to be shaken out. Whereas summer tyres will become clogged, which will smooth out the surface, rendering them completely useless.
Can you use BMW winter tyres in the summer?

Currently, no UK law states that you cannot use winter tyres in the summer. However, it is recommended against using winter tyres all-year-round. Winter tyres will wear out far quicker than summer tyres so they will need replacing more often, which will be expensive. In warm weather conditions, winter tyres generate less grip and traction on the road, making them less safe to use in the summer months. We recommend removing your winter tyres and storing them for the following winter.
