    • BMW X5 Engine Information

With punchy petrol, dynamic diesel and hybrid engine options available, a used BMW X5 caters to all types of drivers. The entry-level xDrive30d gets a 294 bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel which completes the 0-62 mph sprint in just 6.1 seconds. It has a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic gearbox too, making this ride extra responsive.

For petrol heads, the range-topping 523 bhp M60i will really get your heart racing, reaching 0-62 mph in just 4.3 seconds. There’s also the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e which combines a 30-litre, six-cylinder petrol engine with a large battery and an electric motor. This efficient X5 can reach 60+ miles on electric-only power.

    • BMW X5 Practicality and Running Costs

If you’re looking for a bright, spacious and well-organised SUV with plenty of head and leg room for five adults and an abundance of storage space, you’re in for a treat. The BMW X5 is massively practical, offering a comfortable ride for both long and short journeys.

Some models even come with an additional two seats. The boot space is also impressive, with 5-seat diesel models boasting 650 litres and PHEVs offering 500 litres. Seven-seater BMW X5 models still get 575 litres of space, perfect for all your travel needs.

Running costs depend on what model you choose. Not only is the xDrive50e wonderfully economical, achieving an impressive 200+ mpg, but it can also lower your company car tax rate. Electric cars are also cheaper to run than diesel or petrol alternatives, especially if you make the most of off-peak electric charges.

    • BMW X5 Interior, Technology and Safety

Designed with comfort in mind, a used BMW X5 comes with electric-adjustable seats and lumbar support. You’ll have a commanding view of the road thanks to the high driving position and as all controls are within easy reach, accessing the impressive array of technology features is a breeze.

Select models come with a 12.3-inch digital dashboard display with sharp graphics and a head-up display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard. There are front, rear and side parking sensors as well as a reversing camera for additional safety. Some models even have a surround-view camera for hassle-free manoeuvres.

    • BMW X5 History

The X5 made history for BMW, being the marque’s first SUV. It was first launched in 1999 as the E53 model, boasting all-wheel drive and a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation followed in 2006 and was known internally as the E70. This introduced the xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. The X5 M performance variant was then launched in 2009 as a 2010 model.

Officially named a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) thanks to its on-road handling capabilities, the X5 started a wave of other similar vehicles including the X3 in 2003 and the X6 in 2008.

The third generation of the X5 came in 2013 with a choice of three engines. More were added later in the year including the six-cylinder xDrive40d and xDrive35i models. The xDrive40e hybrid was also introduced, featuring a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 9kWh 351V Li-ion battery pack and an electric motor achieving a peak power output of 83 kW.

The fourth and current generation was launched in 2018. A 2020 addition to the line-up was the xDrive45e PHEV, powered by a B58 engine, and mated with an 82 kW electric motor and a larger 24 kWh battery pack.

Used BMW X5 models to look out for

All models within the BMW X5 range offer a unique set of features. Here’s a rundown of what to expect:

      • BMW X5 M Sport - with sportier upgrades including larger alloys, firmer suspension and distinctive M badges, this is a real head-turner.
      • BMW X5 M50i - As the fastest X5 in the range with a huge 530 hp, this powerhouse can reach 0-62 mph in just 4.3 seconds.
      • BMW X5 xDrive40i - the 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine offers a refreshing change from diesel and delivers a smooth, confident performance.
      • X5 xDrive30d M Sport - If it’s diesel you’re looking for, this is a determined and efficient runner with an athletic character.
      • X5 M60i xDrive - mild hybrid technology works alongside a 4.4-litre TwinPower Turbo V8 engine.
    • It’s always good to be a savvy buyer. So here are several things to look out for when purchasing a BMW X5. You won’t have to worry about any of the below when purchasing a used BMW X5 from Group 1 BMW as all of our models come backed up by an Approved Used guarantee.

Steering racks, manual gearboxes and clutches

Make sure the steering is light, quiet and smooth. Gearbox changes should also be effortless. As for the clutch, if it feels stiff, spongy or can be pushed all the way to the floor, seek advice.

      Locks, windows and general controls

All controls should function perfectly. Don’t be afraid to test all locks, window controls, dials and infotainment systems to ensure they work as expected.

      Tyres (Run Flats)

According to the law, all tyres should have a tread depth of 1.6mm, so make sure all four tyres plus any spare tyres meet this standard. Also, look to see if the car is fitted with Run Flats. These will guide you to safety in the event of a puncture.

      Accidental damage

Carry out a 360-degree inspection before signing any purchase or finance agreement. The latter often comes with a basic wear and tear allowance, but any imperfections must be reported from the start so you don’t get charged.
