Like other BMW cars, the 5 Series has an extensive selection of engines to choose from. Its diesel option is a go-to for many drivers, with the 520d proving a big hit for fuel economy. Taking it up a level gives you the 530d with a straight-six engine – ideal for those looking for performance over efficiency. 

Petrol power doesn’t disappoint either, and the 520i impresses with a 2.0-litre turbo engine and 181bhp. But, of course, BMW goes that step further, a lot further, with its pulse-racing M550i. This turbocharged V8, 4.4-litre model is anything but bland and putting your foot down gets you from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds!

The 5 Series also offers some fuel-conscious rides in the form of the 530e and 545e plug-in hybrids. Yet each still brings the fun with an added bonus of electric support.

BMW 5 Series Practicality and Running Costs

As you move up the numbers, you move up the size of the car. So, as the 5 Series is a larger model, its cabin space and boot capacity match in terms of space. You can expect around 530 litres in the back, but this opens up more with the Touring version. However, if you choose the plug-in hybrid, you’ll have to compromise on space as this reduces it by around 120 litres due to the battery position.

Even as a high-power model, you still get great fuel economy. Diesel gives you more bang for your buck at around 47-62mpg. Petrol is slightly less at 26-47mpg. Opting for an older model also provides slightly more mpg than newer versions. To save even more money, the BMW plug-in hybrid has an approximate 30 miles pure electric range.

BMW 5 Series Interior, Technology and Safety

Quality is, of course, never lacking from BMW, and the 5 Series follows suit. Even the older models have similar levels of detail and a premium feel.

Technology is a prominent feature in newer models, and there are hints of its larger 7 Series sibling within the design features. For example, the large 12.3-inch infotainment screen is a focal point on the dash alongside a TFT display behind the steering wheel. 

More influences appear in the driver assistance and safety specs. For example, adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving is an additional feature. There’s also Bluetooth connectivity, an Emergency Call feature and various apps via its connected services.
