BMW 8 Series Convertible History

While the BMW 8 Series was launched in 1990, the convertible version (G14) wasn’t released until November 2018, offering a gran tourer driving experience with a folding cloth roof that operates in just 15 seconds.

The BMW 8 Series Convertible was very different to the Coupe model receiving new panels for the underbody and aluminium rollover bars for added safety. It also weighed 220 lbs more than the coupe. Initial models for the Convertible included the M850i xDrive and the 840d xDrive, both delivering power to all four wheels.

Steering racks, manual gearboxes and clutches

You must always check over the basics. Look for heavy, clunky or noisy steering, a stiff or spongy clutch and jolty gear changes.

Locks, windows and general controls

Always try the locking system, windows and general controls including the infotainment system to check that everything works as it should.

Tyres (Run Flats)

Ideally, your BMW should be fitted with Run Flat tyres. These allow you to get to safety if a puncture occurs. Also, check that the tyre tread is within legal limits.

Accidental damage
