The entry-level 321bhp xDrive40 comes with a 71kWh battery and has an official range of 157 miles. It can reach 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds.

If you want something with a bit more power and longevity, then the xDrive50, with its larger 105kWh battery and real-word range of 284 miles might be more suitable. This model offers 516bhp and a four-wheel drive system. It can do the 0-60mph sprint in just 4.4 seconds. 

With two BMW M eDrive motors and xDrive functionality, the M60 model can race to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds, making it the fastest in the range. 

BMW iX Practicality and Running Costs

With a high roofline and a completely flat interior floor, space is abundant both upfront and in the rear. There’s also an impressive amount of storage dotted around the interior as well as a sizable boot which offers 500 litres of luggage room in a neat square shape. The rear seats can also be dropped in a 40:20:40 configuration by pressing buttons on the wall of the boot. This allows you to carry long or awkwardly shaped cargo too.

The iX is remarkably cheap to run thanks to its electric powertrain and impressive ranges. You’ll save on combustion fuels and can take advantage of low electric tariffs. While a suitably fast ultra-rapid charger can deliver a 10 to 80% top-up in a little over half an hour, a full recharge from a 7.4kW home wall box can take anywhere between eleven and a half hours to seventeen hours. So, look at your energy rates and plug in when it’s most cost-effective.

Unfortunately, the iX will never be super cheap to insure as even the entry-level xDrive40 model sits in group 47 on the 1-50 scale. The xDrive50 and the M60 are in group 50.

Battery health & charge capacity

Battery health and charging capacity should be up-to-scratch. Know what’s expected of your chosen model before making a purchase. Every BMW iX SUV, for instance, comes with a Flexible Fast Charger. This should be able to deliver a full charge from 0-100% in 12 hours on a 240V outlet.

Steering racks, manual gearboxes and clutches
