There are a few types of adaptations available, all helping to make driving safe and accessible for everyone.
With this in mind, you may be able to find a Toyota Motability car already kitted out with features that make it easy to drive. These include:
If you’re a Motability user and the nominated driver, there are plenty of driving controls that make daily driving easier.

The three main types of Toyota Motability adaptations are accessibility, driving & stowage. We’ll work with you to identify which adaptations you may need, as well as finding a compatible Toyota car.
Accessibility adaptations give wheelchair or scooter users easy access to the car. You may not necessarily need a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), so get in touch and we can discuss your options.
Making car access easier for wheelchair users, transfer plates fit the side of your car as an extra surface. They fold away when not in use and require some upper body strength. Electric models are also available for those who need extra help.
Electric person hoists carry wheelchair or scooter users in and out of the car with an electric motor. Position yourself in the sling and the hoist does the rest. The frame folds away to be stored in the boot whilst the sling stays put. Please check compatibility as not all Toyota cars are compatible.
Go for a swivel seat if you need some help getting in and out of the car. They’re an adjustable surface that tilts, raises, lowers and moves side-to-side, getting you in and out easily. Choose from manual and electric models, or go for a wheelchair swivel seat that attaches to the base of a wheelchair. Wheelchair units can’t be operated alone.
Some adaptations make driving your Toyota Motability car more accessible, including steering aids, pedal adaptations and instrument controls. Most driving adaptations require your car to have an automatic transmission.
You can still drive safely without the use of your legs. Hand controls can be used if you have reduced mobility in your legs. With a push/pull device, you push to accelerate and pull to brake. Hand controls require an automatic transmission.
Steering aids give you greater control of the wheel if you find steering difficult. Adaptations like a steering ball fit on the wheel for easier turning.
If you find it difficult to reach or use your Toyota car’s instruments, you can get a remote control device installed. These allow for one-handed control of the lights, indicators, wipers and more from a dedicated control panel.
Electronic accelerators are perfect if you can’t use a push/pull device. These fit the front, back or side of the steering wheel, and can be set up to be pushed or pulled to accelerate. Electronic accelerators require an automatic transmission.
Reduced mobility in your right foot doesn’t mean you have to use hand controls. Instead, you can go for a left foot accelerator. Floor-mounted units lock off the original pedal, whilst twin-flip versions fold the original pedal away, so a nominated driver can use the car too.
You don’t necessarily need to get hand controls if you can’t reach the pedals. Make the pedals easier to reach and use with pedal modifications.
Bringing your wheelchair or scooter wherever you go should be as easy as possible. Stowage adaptations lift and store your mobility aid when driving, with many of these adaptations transferable to your next Toyota Motability car.
Putting your wheelchair or scooter away is quite a physical task. Car boot hoists offer a helping hand by lifting your wheelchair in and out of the boot. Certain car boot hoists will need more space than others, something to consider when choosing a Toyota Motability car.
Want to store your wheelchair somewhere without taking up valuable boot space? Rooftop stowage stores your mobility aid in a secure storage box on the roof, so you can get the most out of your boot. An electric hoist lifts and stores your folded wheelchair at the press of a button.
If you need a wheelchair to get around but don’t want the hassle of bringing and storing it whenever you get in the car, you can get a lightweight foldable wheelchair. It easily folds down to be tucked away when not in use, meaning that you don’t have to bring yours on every journey.
There are over 500 Toyota Motability adaptations available, with around 150 completely free options. You’ll be able to find an affordable option that makes everyday driving easier and enjoyable.
