BMW M Practicality and Running Costs
While the speed and performance of M models are hard to ignore, other factors such as practicality are also important to think about. The good news is BMW M cars are ideal for daily life. Previous versions of the M3 (2014-2018) boast four doors, five seats and a 480-litre boot. Need more room? The opt for the BMW M5 with a boot space of 530-litres.
While increased power is at the core of every used BMW M car, they still offer respectable mileage for such high-performance models. Newer M3 models average 26.3 mpg - not bad for a vehicle with more than 500 bhp. As with all cars in the range, fuel economy will lessen the more you push the M models to their full capabilities.

BMW M Interior, Technology and Safety
From the entry-level M2, you can expect a spacious, comfortable and well-organised interior with standout features including carbon-look trim, leather sports seats and grey dials, Bluetooth, cruise control and parking sensors. Climb up the range for wow-factor extras, with the BMW M5 boasting multi-adjustable sports seats, a double-spoke M design steering wheel, Alcantara headlining and stainless steel pedals. You also get an M setting on the head-up display and the instrument pack is configured especially for the M5 too.
With the M6 sitting at the top of the stylish coupe range, drivers can expect a huge leather-covered central console on select models and plenty of additional tech. Specs can include keyless entry plus a reversing and surround-view camera.

BMW M History
Launched over 50 years ago, BMW’s M range has become an iconic symbol of speed, performance and luxury. M models were designed to supplement BMW’s road car portfolio with specially enhanced models. The first M badge car to be released was the BMW M1, designed by Paul Bracq with finishing touches by Giorgetto Giugaro. It was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1978 featuring a 277 bhp six-cylinder engine capable of 165 mph.
In 1975, a high-performance alternative to the 5 Series Saloon was launched - the BMW M535i. This was powered by a 3.5-litre M30B34 engine. Four years later, the revamped 6 Series was launched - the M635CSi.
1986 was another huge year for BMW, with the launch of the E30 BMW M3, with Evolution and Sport Evolution models making waves with 0-62 mph in 6.9 seconds. Many innovations followed and in 1998, BMW released the M Roadster and M Coupe.
Generations of much-loved models continued to impress BMW followers with M’s first SUV hitting showrooms in 2009 with the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M launching in 2019 with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre S58 powertrain.
The brand continued to push boundaries with the M Division’s most luxurious creation being a Convertible and Gran Coupe version of the M8.
Moving with the times, BMW now offers the XM, the brand’s first high-performance car which combines a V8 M TwinPower Turbo engine with BMW’s 5th generation battery technology for hybrid power.

Steering racks, manual gearboxes and clutches
Check that the steering is light and easy with no knocking noises. Gears should transition smoothly and the car should not shudder or lurch forward as this could indicate a slipped clutch.
Locks, windows and general controls
Sensible car buyers should trial all locks, windows and general controls to ensure they all work perfectly. Any issues should be flagged and inspected.
Tyres (run flats)
Tyres must be legal. This means they should be properly inflated and have the correct tread.
