Choosing the correct tyres
Your tyres need replacing regularly so that you and your drivers are always safe when on the road. When choosing tyres for a commercial vehicle, there’s a lot more to think about than when doing so for a car. Your extra weight means your braking distance is longer than usual, so your tyres need to have the tread and the grip to cope with this. Their pressure and how they’re fitted plays a crucial role too.
Buying part worn tyres
Many people try to save money by purchasing tyres that are part worn. Not only is this dangerous as 98% of these tyres are sold illegally, and 34% aren’t even roadworthy, but it’s also false economy. You end up having to buy the tyres more frequently, and tyres that aren’t brand new cost more money for your vehicle to get moving. Always buy brand new tyres to ensure you’re as safe as possible on the road.
Winter tyres
We all know that icy conditions can lead to less grip on the road and more accidents. However damp and cold roads are also bad conditions for driving in. Thankfully, manufacturers have introduced winter tyres. They’re specially designed to drive in temperatures below 7°, so you can feel confident that your vehicles are protected from the elements when driving in the colder months. Contact your local Van Centre if you’d like to find out more.
To keep your vehicle safe and performing at its optimum level, it’s important that you check your tyres regularly. Not only will this reduce your running costs, but it will also ensure that your vehicle brakes and accelerates properly and can take corners with ease.
Check the following on a regular basis to keep your tyres safe and sturdy:
Just like cars, commercial vehicles are subject to tyre laws. Your tyres are required by law to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the centre three quarters of the tyre around the whole circumference. Tread provides grip so not only does this keep you safe, but it ensures your car is prepared for all weather conditions; from rain to snow. Check your tread regularly as the less tread you have, the less your vehicle can grip the road.Check for objects and bulges in your tyres too. If you’re driving on and off building sites or places with objects on the floor, it’s common to drive over nails and screws that can get lodged in your tyres. Tyres failing to meet regulations is not only dangerous but illegal and can result in fines of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.
How to check
Your local Group 1 Volkswagen Commercials Van Centre can check your tyres for you, as well as advise you on the best replacements should yours be illegal or unsafe. You can check them yourself using a calibrated tread depth gauge. Check the tread at three different points around the tyre to ensure even wear and tear. A simple check can also be done with a 20p coin. You place the coin into the main tread of your tyre, if any part of the edge of the coin is still visible above the tread then your tyres could be illegal. We recommend doing this once a month to make sure your vehicles are always running smoothly.
Tyre pressure is crucial to keeping your vehicles out of trouble and your drivers safe. Under-inflated tyres lead to poor handling and grip which can cause accidents. They also require more force to be turned, costing you fuel and putting unnecessary pressure on your vehicle. Not to mention the impact it can have on the lifespan of your tyres.
Towing
Vans often have to tow heavy objects and it’s important that you’re familiar with the specific towing instructions for your vehicle. The correct tyre pressures can be found in the vehicle handbook, inside the fuel filler cap, or on the driver’s door sill. If you cannot find specific towing instructions, the rear tyres of your vehicle should be set to the ‘fully laden’ pressure.
How to check tyre pressure:
You can tell if your tyres are at the correct pressure if the tyre’s contact with the road is even across the tread width. This will result is an even wear of tread. They’re over-inflated for their load if the tyre’s contact with the road is focused on the centre, resulting in excessive wear of the middle of the tyre. Under-inflated tyres focus their road contact on the outer edge. You’ll notice excessive wear along the outer sides of your tyres.
The heavier your load, the more your braking distance will increase. This is particularly important to know when driving a commercial vehicle. It’s your tyres that take the brunt of this pressure day in and day out, so always check your tread depth to ensure your braking distance is as short as possible. Your driving style is also a contributing factor. Driving and braking erratically can place a huge amount of strain on your tyres.
