Driving should be accessible and comfortable for everyone. With over 50,000 Motability Scheme customers choosing to have adaptations fitted to their vehicles, you too can benefit from the adaptations available on the scheme. Around 150 adaptations can be fitted to your Motability car at no extra cost - making motoring accessible to more people.
Adaptations is the term that is used for a range of products that can help improve your experience on the road. What difficulties are you currently facing with your current car? There is a whole range of adaptations available, which can help make your motoring experience easier or more comfortable.
Some issues can be solved simply by choosing the right MINI model. If you require features such as an automatic gearbox, push-button ignition, parking sensors or a boot with a flat entry, opting for a different model can make all the difference. Our MINI Motability specialists can recommend the right models to suit your individual needs. However, if you do require more help with motoring, then MINI Motability adaptations could be the answer you’ve been looking for.
If you are the main driver of the vehicle and you have difficulty driving, there are a number of Motability adaptations that could help improve your driving experience. Here are some examples:

You have limited mobility or control in your legs |
Mechanical hand controls, electronic accelerators, steering aid and pedal guards |
You have limited mobility in your right hand |
Mechanical hand controls or left foot accelerators |
You have limited strength in your upper body |
Steering aids, remote control devices, easy release handbrakes and electronic accelerators |
Perhaps you or your carer are finding it difficult to stow away your wheelchair or your scooter. If this is the case, you could consider getting adaptations fitted to your Motability car, such as a hoist.

Adaptations |
Your wheelchair or scooter is too heavy to lift and stow |
Car boot or rooftop hoists |
There are three types of Motability adaptations available: accessibility, driving and stowage. Depending on what you find difficult when travelling, there are a range of adaptations that can help. Our MINI Motability specialists can advise you on the best MINI model to choose and the most suitable adaptations for your individual requirements.
When you are a wheelchair user, you don’t have to be limited to a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV). There are a number of Motability adaptations that can be installed on standard cars. Some adaptations can even be transferred from your existing Motability Scheme car to your next one.
Fitted to the side of the car seat, a transfer plate provides a smooth surface between the wheelchair and the car seat. This allows you to move between your wheelchair and the car seat with ease. You must be able to use your upper body strength well to be able to get yourself in and out of the car using a transfer plate.
Once you are comfortably in your seat, the transfer plate can be folded out of the way. Both manual and electric transfer plates are available; however, electric transfer plates will cost more.
Wheelchair users may want to consider an electric person hoist, which physically lifts you into the car. A permanent mount is fitted into the vehicle along with three sections that clip together, forming a frame. The canvas sling can be positioned with very little effort from the wheelchair user.
Slip the heavy-duty hooks onto the hoist, which is then raised electronically. Once you are seated in the car, the frames of the hoist can be stowed in the boot, but the sling must remain in place. This makes it easier to reverse the process once you reach your destination.
Designed to make it easier to get in and out of the car, permanent swivel seats can turn and move in and out of the car, lower or tip. Both manual swivel seats and powered versions are available depending on your requirements. You may need help stowing your wheelchair in the boot if you are unable to do it yourself.
Wheelchair swivel seats are also available. Made up of two parts, they enable the base of your wheelchair to connect to a special car seat; however, they cannot be operated independently.
From simple attachments to replacing all controls with a system designed specifically for you, driving adaptations can enable you to drive where it would usually not be possible. Driving adaptations can help with speed control, steering and signalling; however, most controls require an automatic gearbox. The original controls can still be used with the adaptations in place in most cases, which means your nominated driver can still use the car.
Do you find using standard pedals for acceleration and braking difficult? If you need help with speed control, you may find hand controls like a push/pull device more suitable. Control the speed of the car with your hands by pushing or pulling a lever to accelerate or brake.
Ideal for those who have difficulty holding or turning a standard steering wheel, steering aids are the ideal solution. Various solutions could help you drive with ease, such as a steering wheel ball that can be fitted to give you more control when steering the car.
Operate your standard car controls like the indicators, windscreen wipers and headlights with a single control panel mounted on the steering wheel. Remote control devices can make operating basic car functions easy and can be done with one hand.
Designed for those who have limited mobility in their legs or struggle with push/pull hand controls, an electronic accelerator could be the solution. All electronic accelerators come with a hand-operated brake.
If you have limited mobility in your right leg, you could benefit from a left foot accelerator. There are a few types of left foot accelerators available, including a floor-mounted accelerator and a twin-flip accelerator.
You could choose to have the pedals extended if you have difficulty reaching the pedals when driving. Modified pedals can bring them closer to the driving seat, so you can drive more comfortably.
Lifting your wheelchair or scooter into your car can be very difficult without a stowage system. A boot hoist or a rooftop stowage unit works by taking the weight of the wheelchair or scooter and guiding it into either your boot or your rooftop stowage unit. They both work at the touch of a button. Most stowage adaptations can be transferred to your next Motability Scheme car.
Store your wheelchair or scooter in your car boot using a hoist. Tie-downs are included to help safely secure your wheelchair or scooter in your car boot. The type of wheelchair or scooter will affect the type of boot hoist you require and how much space is needed.
We recommend bringing your scooter or wheelchair to the dealership, so our Motability specialists can advise which hoist type is most suitable. Car boot hoists are an alternative to a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV).
If you use a manual wheelchair and need to use your boot to transport other items, a car rooftop stowage unit could be the solution for you. It allows you to store a folded wheelchair in a box that sits on the roof of your car. An electric hoist lifts the folded wheelchair into the rooftop box. They can usually be installed on either the passenger or the driver's side.
Wheelchair users may benefit from leasing a lightweight manual wheelchair alongside your Motability Scheme car. Maximise your mobility when you’re out and about and choose from either a self-propelled or assistant-propelled wheelchair. Both options are easy to fold, stow and transport in your car.
