Accessibility & Stowage adaptations
When you are a wheelchair user, you don’t have to be limited to a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV). There are a number of Motability adaptations that can be installed on standard cars. Some adaptations can even be transferred from your existing Motability Scheme car to your next one.

Transfer plates
Transfer plates give you an extra hand when getting in or out of the car. They act as a middle surface between the car seat and your wheelchair. Upper body strength is required with manual transfer plates, but you can also get electric versions.

Lightweight manual wheelchair
If you need a wheelchair when you’re out but don’t want the hassle of transporting it, you can get a lightweight manual wheelchair that folds away. Keep it in your car so you always have access to a wheelchair.

Driving adaptations
There are many ways we can change the setup of the car to suit your mobility needs when it comes to driving. Get help with accelerating, braking, steering and other functions like lights. Most driving adaptations require an automatic transmission.

Hand controls
Accelerate and brake with the use of your hands. Hand controls, like a push/pull device, mean you don’t need to use the pedals. Instead, you push or pull the device to accelerate or brake. Hand controls need an automatic transmission.

Steering aids
Make steering easier with a steering aid. Devices like a steering ball fit the wheel to give you more leverage when turning.

Remote control devices
If you need a hand with using functions like lights and wipers, you can get a remote-controlled device. They work as a mounted control panel, operated by one hand.

Electronic accelerators
Electronic accelerators are ideal if you can’t use a push/pull device. You can choose how it’s set up, fitting it to the front, back or side of the steering wheel, and can be pushed or pulled to accelerate.

Left foot accelerators
Having reduced mobility in your right leg doesn’t mean you have to use hand controls or electronic accelerators. Instead, you can install a left foot pedal, with the original pedal removed or turned into a flip pedal for another nominated driver.

Pedal modifications
If you can’t reach the pedals properly but have enough mobility in your legs to use the pedals, you can get pedal modifications. They extend the pedals to make accelerating and braking much easier.

Need help with the cost of adaptations?
With around 150 adaptations available at no additional cost, getting the help you need with motoring couldn’t be easier. However, more complex adaptations may not be covered by your Mobility Allowance. There are grants available from Motability and the Government that could help you cover the costs of your adaptations.
