What is Tyre Safety Month

Tyre Safety Month was first established in October 2010 and since then has taken place every year. The annual event is setup by TyreSafe, a UK charity dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of tyre maintenance and the dangers of defective and illegal tyres. The charity was formed in 2006 and so far its activities have helped to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured each year in a tyre-related accident by an impressive 46%.

How can I check my tyres are safe?

There are lots of ways to maintain your tyres to meet the expectations of being road legal and safe to drive.

At Group 1 we can help you check your tyres by following a few simple steps:

Step 1: Checking your tyre pressures
Underinflated or overinflated tyres can affect the handling of your vehicle, therefore having the right tyre pressure plays a crucial part in having road legal tyres. A tyre pressure gauge is an easy way to get an accurate pressure reading and inflating your tyres is something anyone can do. Your vehicle’s handbook or on the side of your drivers door should list the correct pressure settings for your tyres.

Step 2: Checking the condition of your tyres
When you're examining your tyres you need to be looking for any cuts, splits or nicks, and also any glass, nails or screws that might have become embedded in the rubber and could cause a puncture in the future. Make sure you check your spare tyre too so that it’ll be ready and waiting if you need it.

Step 3: Checking the tread depth of your tyres
At Group 1 we offer a free tyre check at your nearest dealership. You can also check your tyre depth yourself by purchasing a tyre depth gauge. The legal limit for your tyre tread depth is 1.6mm.

Watch our short video here to see how easy it is to check your tyre tread.

What makes your tyres Illegal?

At Group 1 we are here to help you understand what makes your tyres Illegal and how we can support you so this doesn't happen to you.

Driving with inadequate tyres can not only be extremely dangerous but could also potentially result in fines of up to £2,500 per tyre, three penalty points on your license and invalidated car insurance. Therefore, it’s crucial that your tyres are roadworthy and that you conduct regular tyre safety checks.

Below are the main casues of illegal tyres.

✔ Low tread depth (Legal limit 1.6mm)
✔ Damage to your sidewall
✔ Under or over inflated tyres
✔ Tyres that are not suitable for you vehicle
