There are three main types of adaptations to make driving safer and easier. But you may find that certain Volkswagen Motability cars come with handy features that already make driving more accessible, like:

Accessibility adaptations

Wheelchair and scooter users might not need a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) as there are plenty of accessibility adaptations. These make getting in and out of your Volkswagen Motability car safe and easy.
Transfer plates

A transfer plate gives wheelchair and scooter users easy access to the car. The plate acts as a surface to use between the wheelchair and car seat, with some upper body strength required to get in and out. But there are electric versions available for added help.
Electric person hoist

If you need extra help accessing the car, you can get an electric person hoist. An electric motor does the lifting, securing you in a sling that moves in or out of the car. And when not in use, the frame folds down in the boot. Some units may need larger boot spaces, so please check your Volkswagen’s compatibility.
Swivel seats

Swivel seats add an extra surface between your mobility and the car seat. They’re fully adjustable too, moving side-to-side, up and down and tilting. There are both manual and electric versions available for added help, or there are wheelchair swivel seats that attach directly to the base of a wheelchair. Wheelchair swivel seats can’t be operated alone.
Driving adaptations

If you have trouble with any of the driving controls, from pedals and steering to using the lights, driving adaptations give you full control for a safe drive. Most Volkswagen driving adaptations need an automatic transmission to work.
Hand controls

You can still drive a car without the use of your legs. Hand controls give you full control of the pedals if you have reduced leg mobility. Units like a push/pull device fit your steering wheel, accelerating when pushed and braking when pulled. This requires an automatic transmission.
Steering aids

Make using the wheel easier with a steering aid. These adaptations fit the wheel and give you better leverage when steering, with steering balls being a popular choice.
Remote control devices

If you struggle to use your car’s instruments, a remote control device gives intuitive control. They function as a dedicated control panel that can be used with one hand, giving you easy command of the lights, wipers and other functions.
Electronic accelerators

For those with reduced mobility in their legs who are unable to use a push/pull device, there are plenty of electronic accelerators. These devices fit wherever you need on the steering wheel, on the front, back or side. And you can set them up to be either pushed or pulled to accelerate
Left foot accelerators

You don’t always have to use hand controls if you have reduced leg mobility. Instead, you can install a left foot accelerator. Floor mounted units are perfect if you’re the only driver, as the original pedal is locked away. Twin-flip accelerators are best if you have another nominated driver, as the original right-hand pedal folds away when not in use.
Pedal modifications

If you need help with reaching the pedals, you can add pedal modifications. So you don’t always need to get hand accelerators if you can’t reach the pedals.
Stowage adaptations

You should always have easy access to your mobility aids, especially when you’re out and about. Stowage adaptations store and transport your wheelchair or scooter in your Volkswagen Motability car. And you can swap many of these adaptations between Motability cars.
Car boot hoists

Car boot hoists take the stress out of lifting your wheelchair or scooter in and out of the boot. Instead, an electric motor does the work for you. Simply attach your mobility aid and let the hoist do the rest. Certain hoists will need more boot space.
Rooftop stowage

Store your wheelchair or scooter safely and out of the way with rooftop stowage. Instead of taking up all the space in the boot, your mobility aid is kept on the roof in a roof box. And they’re easy to use, with an electric motor doing the heavy lifting for you.
Lightweight manual wheelchair

Make sure you’ve always got your mobility aid nearby with a lightweight manual wheelchair. These units fold away to be stored in the car when not in use, so you don't always have to bring your wheelchair every time you get in your Volkswagen.
