All-Electric Vehicles

All-Electric Ford vehicles are powered by electricity alone and need to be charged before your journey. The electric motor replaces the traditional combustion engine, using large battery packs to power the motor.

An electric traction motor uses the power stored in the battery pack to drive the wheels of the car. Power flows from the battery to the electric traction motor, which is then converted by the transmission into wheel power. This type of powertrain creates zero tailpipe emissions thanks to the use of electricity, cutting running costs and offering £0 road tax.

Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

Plug-in Hybrid Ford vehicles have two power sources, similar to a hybrid. However, the battery's voltage is higher and enables greater fuel efficiency and added bite. Plug-in Hybrid batteries need to be recharged at a charging point, much like an electric motor.

This type of powertrain uses a traditional engine with an added electric motor with a battery that holds more electric power than other types of hybrid types. Some Plug-in Hybrids can be driven on electric power alone on journeys under a certain mileage, further cutting running costs and emissions. These are a great choice if you’re unsure about going fully electric.

Hybrid Vehicles

Hybrid Ford vehicles switch between a conventional engine and pure electric for a limited distance. The battery for the electric motor is recharged with regenerative braking and via the combustion engine, meaning you never have to plug in.

Hybrid powertrains give your combustion engine a boost, kicking in at certain points to help power and efficiency. It’s even used for powering other systems in your car, like the radio and air-con. Hybrid cars have all the benefits of an added electric motor without the need to manually charge.

Mild Hybrid Vehicles

Mild Hybrid Ford vehicles have a small electric motor that works together with a conventional engine to help increase efficiency. This type of powertrain is very similar to standard hybrid, but instead, the electric motor is much smaller, making it a more affordable option.

The main function of a mild-hybrid powertrain is to reduce CO2 emissions and increase fuel efficiency, rather than adding power. It’s the more affordable option when it comes to hybrid cars. And they’re available with manual transmissions too, perfect for anyone after that classic driving experience.

What's the difference between electric & hybrid?

There are 4 main types of electric vehicles available. Mild Hybrid (MHEV) vehicles feature a small electric motor, but it does not solely power the car. It is simply there to assist the conventional engine. Hybrid (HEV) vehicles are mostly powered by a conventional engine, but an electric motor can take over for short distances. Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) vehicles have two sources of power; a larger battery enables longer distance driving on solely electric power. And then there are All-Electric vehicles, which you simply plug in, charge and off you go.
How can you charge electric vehicles?

Regenerative braking charges the battery of electric vehicles by capturing energy that is typically wasted during braking. There are also 3 ways in which Plug-in Hybrid and All-Electric vehicles can be charged using plug-in options. Electric vehicles can be charged from standard 230V wall outlets, or via wallboxes, which can be installed in your home for faster, overnight charging. Public charging stations can also charge your vehicle much faster than at home, with the price and charging capability varying significantly.
What’s the average range of electric vehicles?

Mild Hybrid (MHEV) vehicles cannot be driven solely by the electric battery and motor, as it utilises a conventional engine. Hybrid (HEV) vehicles are capable of driving short distances on electric power alone. Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV) vehicles can operate on electric power for journeys of approximately 30 miles. All-Electric vehicles, when fully charged, can vary from 100 miles on older models to approximately 300 miles on newer models.
