Driving should be an enjoyable and safe experience, and accessible for all. However, for those motorists who have mobility issues, it can be difficult. If you’re already part of the Motability Scheme, you could benefit further by adding one of the 150 or more adaptations that can be fitted to your car.
What are adaptations? Basically, it’s the name for a range of devices and products that are designed to fit to your vehicle to improve aspects of motoring for driver or passenger. Many are very simple additions to help you drive the car easier, or even just get into and out of it without a struggle.
If you are experiencing issues when driving, you might benefit from changing your car and choosing a Ford model better suited to your circumstances. Many models come with useful features like an automatic gearbox as standard. Or, you could discuss some of the adaptations with our Ford Motability specialists, and get a device fitted to your current vehicle.
Speak to our Ford team today, and find out how Motability Adaptations can improve your experience of driving.
If you’re the main driver of your car but finding any aspect of operating it difficult or uncomfortable, there’s sure to be a Motability adaptation product to help.

Get in touch with our Ford Motability specialists at your local Group 1 Ford dealership if you would like to discuss which adaptations could help make motoring easier for you.
There is a wide range of Motability adaptations, and these are categorised into three broad types. These are driving, accessibility, and stowage. Within each of these groups you’ll find a selection of adaptations to help you get the very best from your Ford.
A Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) is an option for wheelchair users who drive, but accessibility adaptations provide an alternative, and can help you get in and out of your car with improved ease. Adaptations can be fitted to several Ford models.
Simple to fit to the side of the car seat when in use and easy to fold away when not needed, a transfer plate enables you to move from wheelchair into the vehicle. Using a transfer plate does require good upper body strength. Choose between a manual transfer plate and a more expensive version.
A solution for wheelchair and scooter users who may be struggling to get into the car is to have an electric hoist fitted. The mount of the hoist is fitted permanently to the vehicle, which makes the process much quicker once installed, while the frame is made up of three sections that can be dismantled when not in use and stowed in the boot of the car. A canvas sling transfers the person from wheelchair, into the car. Because not every Ford model is specified to have a hoist fitted, check with our specialists before ordering.
Swivel seats – available in manual or powered versions – are permanent fixtures that have a full range of movement (up, down, tilt, lift) which help to get in and out of the car. If you’re getting in from a wheelchair, bear in mind that you’ll need some support to put the ‘chair into the boot. You can also ask for a wheelchair swivel seat. Comprising two sections, this connects the base of your wheelchair to an adapted car seat.
There are a range of adaptations that can make it possible for someone to drive where otherwise it would be highly unlikely. Driving adaptations provide practical solutions to people with limited mobility in legs, arms and hands, as well as other difficulties. From steering aids to remote control devices, the answer to your driving worries might be a lot closer than you think. Speak to a member of our Ford Motability specialist team for more information on available adaptations.
Replace standard foot pedals with hand controls. If you have limited or reduced mobility in your legs, you can choose to operate the car with your hands, instead. Use a pull and push lever device to accelerate and brake. There are several different types of hand control available, but with a pull/push device your car needs to have an automatic gearbox.
Some drivers might find it tricky to grip, turn and operate a standard car steering wheel. This is a problem with a simple solution. There are a number of steering aids that can help. A steering ball is just such one device. You can use it to steer the vehicle with one hand, leaving the other free to use other hand controls, if required.
If operating dashboard controls such as headlights and indicators isn’t possible, you can install a remote control device instead. This gives you control over a number of functions. There are a wide range of remote control devices, from a fairly basic 5-way model to more complex versions such as 10-way or 13-way.
An electronic accelerator is suitable for a driver who perhaps struggles to operate standard pedals and hand controls. There are multiple different versions of these, including Wireless Satellite Accelerator and Electronic Throttle Trigger designs. All come complete with a hand-operated brake.
For drivers with limited mobility in their right leg, an accelerator in the standard position can be very difficult to operate. An alternative is a left foot accelerator, which replaces the standard one. Among the types available are designs called Quick Release, Twin Flip Folding and Floor Mounted Pedal Transfer.
If you can’t reach standard car pedals easily enough to drive comfortably or safely, there are a number of options available to you. You can choose from a range of pedal extension tools to bring these controls closer to the driver’s seat, and make motoring a little easier.
Wheelchairs and scooters are important mobility aids that need to be transported in the vehicle with you. But, they’re also heavy, large objects that can be cumbersome to move and even harder to lift. Consider some of the stowage adaptations that can be fitted to your Motability Scheme car.
A hoist does all the heavy lifting for you, sparing you – or a partner or carer – the tough job of getting your wheelchair into the boot of the car. Once the wheelchair, or scooter, is placed in the boot, you can use the tie-backs provided to keep it secure while in transit. Our Ford Motability specialists will need to see your wheelchair or scooter to help them advise on the most suitable models of car boot hoist for you.
If you need the car boot space for other items, you can elect to have a rooftop stowage unit fitted instead. This box-type unit can be added to either the driver or the passenger side of the car’s roof. The wheelchair is folded and then moved by an electric hoist into the unit.
An alternative to using any kind of hoist is to leave your wheelchair at home instead of carrying it in the car, and hire a lightweight manual wheelchair instead. You can keep this in the car and just use it when you’re out and about. If you need someone to push you when in it, you’ll need an assistant-propelled model. If you’re happy to operate it yourself, opt for a self-propelled version.
With around 500 different types of Motability Adaptations available, prices vary though many are available at no extra cost. To find out more information on pricing and adaptations, contact your local Group 1 Ford dealership and speak to one of the team. They will be happy to work with you to run through the right adaptations for your car, and guide you through the process every step of the way.
