While tyres are tough and can withstand lots of use, they do wear down and will eventually need replacing. Legally, all tyres have to be replaced when the tread gets down to 1.6mm or less, but we recommend replacing your tyres when the tread falls below 3mm. By replacing your tyres when the tread is at this level they will have better grip, ensuring your car is safer to drive.
Having new tyres also helps your car to perform effectively on the road, so you can get more miles out of your fuel and save money in the long run.
By having your tyres replaced professionally, you will have the peace of mind that they are fitted correctly. Tyres that are not aligned properly will wear down unevenly, reducing the effectiveness of the grip.

The tread depth on your Volkswagens tyres is essential to your safety, as your tyre tread helps remove water from the road surface, allowing your tyre to grip on the road.
As your tyre depth wears down, the ability to remove the water and grip to the surface is reduced, compromising your safety.
The legal minimum tread depth for a car tyre in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre around the entire circumference. Driving on tyres which fail to meet this regulation is not only dangerous but illegal, and you can be fined up to £2,500, as well as three penalty points for each illegal tyre.
This should be checked once a month, and if you don’t have a tread depth gauge, a quick and easy way to check is using a 20p coin. Please the coin into the main tread of the tyre, and if the marked rim of the coin doesn’t totally disappear into the tread, your tyres may be illegal.
