Everyone should be able to experience motoring comfortably, whether driving themselves or being driven around by a nominated driver. The Motability Scheme has over 50,000 customers who choose to have adaptations fitted to their vehicles. You can benefit from the scheme too. There are around 150 adaptations that can be fitted to your Motability car at no additional cost.
Adaptations are essentially a range of products that can help improve your experience on the road. Depending on the difficulties you are currently facing, adaptations can help make your motoring experience more comfortable.
There are some issues that can simply be solved by choosing the right Audi model. Switching to a different model can make all the difference, especially if you require features such as an automatic gearbox, push-button ignition, parking sensors or a boot with a flat entry. Our Audi Motability specialists are here to advise you on the right Audi models that can improve your motoring experience.
If you do need more help with motoring, then Audi Motability adaptations could help you significantly.

Depending on your unique requirements, there are a number of Motability adaptations available that fall into three categories: accessibility, driving and stowage. These types of adaptations can all help in various ways depending on what you find difficult when travelling. Our Audi Motability specialists can advise you on the best Audi model to suit you and what type of adaptations you could benefit from.
For wheelchair users who drive, Motability adaptations provide an alternative to using a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, known as a WAV. Take a look at some of the most popular devices that can be fitted to standard cars below:
Move from wheelchair to vehicle swiftly and easily by using a transfer plate, which fits to the side of the car seat. The smooth surface of the transfer plate makes going from a wheelchair into a vehicle a relatively easy process. You will, though, need to be able to use your upper body strength to use the transfer plate, so check if it's suitable for you. When not in use, the plate can be folded away. You might prefer an electric version – though it will cost more than the manual type.
Take the strain away when it comes to getting from your wheelchair or scooter into the car by using a hoist, which does the job for you. The mount fits permanently into the car, and stays in position ready for the return journey, while the frame, which is made up of three sections, can be taken apart when not in use and stowed away. The hoist then lifts you, using a canvas sling, into the car.
An alternative to the fixed seats found in standard cars, swivel seats are permanent fixtures but far more flexible in terms of movement. Because they move in a range of different directions – tip, tilt, lower and so on – they make it easier to get out of a wheelchair and into the car. Wheelchair swivel seats are another adaptation. These connect the base of the wheelchair to a car seat that has a special design. The wheelchair base needs fitting into position though, so these aren’t suitable for independent use.
Driving adaptations can make the crucial difference between being able to operate a car, and not. Whatever is hampering your motoring experience, there's something to help – whether that’s a complete overhaul and upgrade of controls to install a new system, or simply the introduction of an automatic gearbox. Some of the most popular Motability Adaptations for your Audi include:
Standard, foot-operated pedals are inaccessible if you have limited mobility in your legs, so not why not use hand controls instead? Using a push/pull hand device to accelerate and brake resolves that problem.
Issues with hand mobility can cause problems with gripping and turning a steering wheel, but steering aids are one possible fix. There are several different solutions. A steering ball can be used with one hand, giving you control of the car and the ability to use other functions with your free hand.
Instead of struggling to use the controls that make your headlights – and other functions, like indicators – work, you can have a single control panel fitted. This is usually mounted in a convenient location, on the steering wheel. You can use one hand to operate this control panel, leaving the other free.
There are four different types of electronic accelerators, which can be used if leg and hand/arm mobility is an issue. Trigger, over ring, under ring and ghost ring accelerators all have slightly different functionality, so do discuss all these options with our Audi Motability Adaptations specialists to determine the best type for you. All devices come with a hand operated brake included.
If you can’t use the standard accelerator pedal because you have limited right leg mobility, swap sides! A left foot accelerator replaces the standard version. There is a choice of types. With a floor-mounted accelerator, a pedal guard is fitted over the original pedal. Or there's a twin-flip accelerator pedal, located on the left side of the brake, with the original accelerator pedal folded away.
Do you have difficulties reaching the pedals in your car? If so, modifying the pedals makes them easier to reach by extending them, bringing them closer to the driver's seat.
Wouldn’t it be great to lift your wheelchair or scooter into your car at the touch of a button? Well, thanks to some of the stowage adaptations, you can. Take the problem of what can be a physically demanding task off your shoulders with one of these Motability adaptations:
You can add a car boot hoist to your vehicle to help with loading and unloading your wheelchair or scooter. The type of wheelchair or scooter you have will have a bearing on what kind of boot hoist is best for your car, so you’ll need to bring your mobility aid to your local Audi dealership to discuss your options. Some hoists are only suitable for light wheelchairs; heavier models will need what’s known as a 4-way hoist.
A stowage box fixed to the rooftop of your car is another option. You can choose the positioning of the unit, either passenger side or driver side. With a rooftop stowage unit, an electric hoist lifts the wheelchair up and into the box. A word of advice: just be aware of height restrictions, particularly when it comes to certain types of car park, when you have a unit fitted to the vehicle’s roof.
Hiring a lightweight wheelchair removes the need to worry about storing a heavier wheelchair in your car at all. You could have the option of hiring a lighter wheelchair as part of your Motability Scheme. These are travel-friendly and easy to fold, and can be used exclusively when you’re out and about, leaving your main wheelchair at home for when you return.
The price of Motability adaptations vary depending on what you need. You can apply for a Motability Adaptation grant for help with funding. For more information on all the pricing options or to discuss the grant, contact your local Audi dealership and ask to speak to a member of the team. They can answer any questions you may have.
